Interventional cardiology is a subspecialty of cardiology that utilizes non-surgical, catheter-based procedures to treat all sorts of heart diseases, such as narrowed arteries, damaged or weakened blood vessels, heart valve disorders, and congenital heart disease. The doctor places a tiny tube in clogged arteries to allow blood to flow properly or repair holes in the heart or inserts special devices in the heart to help it do its job.

As the procedure is minimally-invasive, patients that undergo this form of treatment are usually up and walking shortly after the procedure. The same thing cannot be said for those that undergo invasive surgery.

Cardiovascular disease

Peripheral vascular disease

Peripheral vascular disease (PVD) is a circulation disorder that affects the arteries that carry blood to the head, organs and limbs. It is typically caused by a buildup of plaque that causes narrowing and blockage. PVD may cause swelling and severe pain in the affected lower extremity, as well as restricted mobility due to pain or discomfort.

Structural heart disease

Structural heart disease involves defects or disorders of the heart tissue or valves. These problems may be congenital, meaning they are present at birth. Or, they may develop later in life often due to wear and tear. Heart valve disease is a type of structural disease that is more common among the aged population and is a growing problem in recent years with the increase in life expectancy.
